Want to be a yoga teacher? Pros & Cons, Rewards & Regrets ...

Written by Senior Yoga Teacher & Professional dancer Kristina Rihanoff

Ever thought about teaching yoga? Let me tell you, it's not just a job, it's an adventure that transforms not only your students lives but yours too. Having journeyed from being a dance teacher for nearly 30years to stepping onto the yoga mat as an instructor, I've felt firsthand the magic and the challenges. Here’s the lowdown on why teaching yoga could be the best move you ever make.

Why Go for It?

Your Yoga, Your Journey: Teaching yoga deepens your own practice and understanding like nothing else. It’s about taking your passion for yoga and turning it up to eleven, learning every day, and sharing that love and knowledge with others.

Spread the Joy: Seeing someone nail a pose for the first time or find a moment of peace in savasana because of your guidance? Pure gold. It’s about those little victories, smiles, and 'aha' moments that make every class worth it.

Live on Your Terms: Fancy teaching a sunrise class on the beach or leading a serene evening session in a cozy studio? Yoga teaching offers the flexibility to craft your dream schedule and work in spaces that light you up.

Build Your community: Connect with folks who share your passion, from wide-eyed beginners to seasoned yogis. These connections turn into friendships, support systems, and sometimes, even a second family.

The Flip Side?

Sure, it’s not all sun salutations and smooth sailing. There’s the hustle to build your name, the challenge of balancing energy (yours and your students'), and the real talk about income variability. But remember, every job has its hurdles, it’s how you leap over them that counts.

Rewards:

Making a difference, one pose at a time, is what it’s all about. It’s about guiding, inspiring, and sometimes even healing. That impact? Priceless.

Then there’s the personal growth spurt. Teaching yoga throws you into the deep end of self-discovery, challenging you to face fears (like, "What if I’m not good enough?") and pushing you to grow in confidence and skill.

Regrets:

Maybe just one: not starting sooner. Once you get into the groove, you’ll wonder why you ever hesitated.

And those moments of doubt, comparing yourself to Insta-famous yogis? They’ll happen. But they’re also your cue to embrace your unique style. That’s what your students will love about you.

When I stood before my first yoga class 8 years ago knees shaking, mind racing with "what ifs," I took a deep breath and dove in. And guess what? It was the best decision I ever made. It wasn’t about performing perfect postures but about sharing a journey, exploring together, and growing side by side.
